GDF & Western Tigers to play in final
Kaieteur News – Tournament favourites Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Western Tigers have both made it to the final of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/Kashif & Shanghai (K&S) 2021 Super 16 which is scheduled for tomorrow at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC), Leonora, following Wednesday night’s play at the same venue.
Wednesday’s action featured a double header where Western Tigers matched skills with Police FC in the first semifinal that kicked off at 18:00hrs. Police FC were cruising to victory thanks to a 65th minute strike from Jermaine Junor that saw them lead up until the 85th minute of play when Colin Europe equalised from a well executed set piece.
Two minutes later, Western Tigers completed the come from behind victory after Trayon Bobb broke away from the defence and rounded the keeper with a fine finish for the 2-1 victory to Western Tigers.
The second semi final between GDF and Den Amstel had the crowd on their feet throughout with GDF; running with the breeze, dominating the first half of play that finished 1-0 in their favour, but squandered opportunities that could have allowed for a more comfortable lead.
Two goals in under ten minutes from Gideon Payne in the second half (51st & 59th minutes) gave the West Demerara unit the lead and nullified Chris Macey’s first half strike for GDF.
GDF continued to exhibit their fighting spirit as they did against Milerock in the quarterfinal when Ian Dooker equalised in the 87th minute of the match which sent the game into extra-time.
Extra time played out with the matched deadlocked 2-all and GDF won the battle of nerves 3-1 via kicks from the penalty mark.
