Dear Editor,
Note is taken of Deputy Speaker, Lenox Schuman’s, call for President Dr Irfan Ali to meet with Opposition Leader, Joe Harmon, to settle the permanency of judicial appointments in Guyana. I agree this will be wise and the President should make the first move. What would make it more significant is for the PPP/C to influence the outcome of the PNC leadership race by recognising Harmon who is the seeming moderate among the crop of Dr. Richard Van West Charles and Aubrey Norton.
So far, the most desirable candidate for PNC leader is Volda Lawrence. But she is keeping her cards close to her chest and not giving any indications where or what she may do. It will be recalled that after the West Berbice riots where Harmon and PNC Leader Granger had gone, and inflamed the situation, it was Lawrence who quieted things down. By her silence, as to whether she will run, she may be positioning herself to be the compromise candidate if no one can be agreed upon.
Whatever President Ali does in the future, it is hoped that he can act with astuteness to take advantage of division in the ranks of his opponents.
Sincerely
Sultan Mohamed
