Dear Editor,
I recently had to buy cooking gas. I use the Massy brand DOCOL. I visited three outlets. All the 20 lbs bottles were dirty and rusty. In the process I noticed Guyoil gas station with a sign up stating the cost of DOCOL gas as $4,000. The Guygas was also the same price. I eventually went to the Massy Supermarket. Most of the bottles were also rusted but I saw a half decent looking bottle of DOCOL gas. It wasn’t as rusted’, just a bit grimy. I went in to pay for the cooking gas.
Massy supermarkets sell the DOCOL cooking gas for $4,305. I was shocked. This is their subsidiarys gas and it cost $305 more. Even their competitor Guygas was selling the DOCOL gas cheaper. I repeat. I was shocked. I was upset with myself for actually buying the gas but did not want to fuss because I had already paid for the gas and was issued a bill.
I will switch to Guygas shortly. I hope they at least ensure the bottles go through a quality control process to clean and repaint the bottles when necessary and not treat Guyanese as a backward people that will accept substandard products.
To cap off this missive. In just about two months, the cost of cooking gas moved from $3,500 to $4,000, an increase of $500. The cost for me went up by $805 because I bought it from the Massy Supermarket.
Sincerely,
Harrish Singh
