Dear Editor,
While we wait to be included in the widespread consultation on the much-needed Electoral Reform, we are told by the Attorney General that “amendments are still under review by the executive of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic.”
How does this revelation give satisfaction to non-PPP/C supporters that their fears and expectation of our Electoral system will be genuinely considered? Would it be wrong for people to think that the PPP/C executive is hijacking the reform process? Would it not be better, if from the start, all stakeholders including members of the PPP/C executive, share the job of coming up with suggestions which would then be reviewed before an amendment bill is drafted?
Our experience with elections over the many decades makes it vital that we are all given meaningful say in the reform of the system. Opportunities to share our opinions at the start of the process seem to be the best way to go. Our input should not be an afterthought.
Yours faithfully
Muhammad Alli
