Kaieteur News – As requested, the students of North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary School will now have the opportunity to use their school’s auditorium to write their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand made this disclosure yesterday during another visit at the school where she met with the 65 students who will be sitting the exams next week. The Minister yesterday went and assessed the state of the school, particularly its auditorium to ensure that it is safe to facilitate the exams.
On June 19, around 11:00hrs, the entire upper flat of the school was destroyed by fire. The section demolished included the classrooms that were prepared for use by students to write their exams. An investigation to determine the origin of the fire is still ongoing.
Last Monday, the Minister had met with parents and the CSEC students to discuss a way forward for the sitting of the exams. At that meeting, students agreed that they prefer to use the school’s auditorium since that section was not destroyed by the fire. Minister Manickchand had told them that the Ministry would have to be given full clearance from both the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to go ahead and use the space if it was deemed safe. Since that meeting, work has commenced to get the auditorium prepared.
The Education Ministry in a statement said that the Ministry did all it could have done to put the school in a state of readiness to accommodate the students. That was done with careful consideration to ensure the environment was safe and would allow the examinations to occur without disruptions.
Manickchand told the students, “So the ball is now in your court. Today, we hand the baton to you to take it from here. We’ve done everything we could possibly do to keep you in a frame of mind that will allow you to just soar, so go ahead and soar.”
It was revealed that majority of the subjects will be written at the school, while students writing Electronic Document Processing and Management (EDPM) will do so at the Government Technical Institute (GTI). Transportation will be provided for students while lunch will be prepared each day when there is an examination.
