Dear Editor,
I must commend the Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony in his relentless efforts to get Guyanese vaccinated against COVID-19. The Government has ensured that Guyanese have access to life saving COVID-19 vaccines. Minister Anthony can be seen at Vaccination sites talking to people and encouraging them to bring others for vaccination. Guyana is far better off than many other countries when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines. The government here is pleading with people to take the vaccines. Some countries can’t even source for their population and has to be dependent on the COVAX facility. The opposition is now making noise on vaccine cost, which leaves me to wonder where we would have been as it relates to vaccines had they still been in power. Simple drugs could not have been procured by them causing shortages, what would have happened when it comes to vaccines? Where and when Harmon and the APNU+AFC would have been able to pay US$10 for vaccines? Most of our early vaccines were purchased when demand was very high and was indeed costly. The opposition MPs took their vaccines quietly and now talking about the cost. When in government, they wasted billions on projects that were of no significant use. The current government must continue to purchase vaccines whatever be the cost. There must be no price attached to saving the lives of our people. The government should still buy Pfizer and Moderna vaccines even though they will be delivered next year. The reason, a third booster dose will be needed. Having two doses of AstraZeneca, Sputnik V and Sinopharm will wean over time and a booster will be needed. Studies have shown that the adenovirus used in some vaccines can become resistant after multiple doses. So it’s logical to use an MRNA vaccine as the booster. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines should be still sourced regardless of cost. By January, it can be given as third doses. Some people are waiting for the MRNA vaccines, let them take the current vaccines offered by the government. I was appalled by Mr. Patterson’s comments that people don’t trust the government and that’s the reason for vaccine hesitancy. Sometimes I wonder if our politicians have the people’s interest at heart. Information on all the vaccines are publicly available so people can do their own research on the vaccines before taking them. They don’t have to rely on the government and certainly not on Mr. Patterson and the APNU.
Yours truly,
B. John
