…seven inmates hospitalised; nearly a dozen escape
Seven inmates of the National Psychiatric Hospital in New Amsterdam, Berbice, are presently hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Hospital with burns and other injuries to their bodies, after a fire was started in one of the wards of the institution by another inmate. Police sources have also confirmed that nearly a dozen other inmates escaped following the incident.
Based on reports, the fire started sometime around 20:00 hrs. in the ward where hostile inmates are housed – those inmates/patients are said to be those that were remanded or sentenced to the institution from the court. Police sources said that the fire was started with a lighter.
Regional Chairman, David Armogan, last evening disclosed that the fire was tamed and the police were at the scene conducting investigations. Ranks are also on the hunt for those that escaped. Just recently an inmate was killed and another injured during a brawl in the same ward of the institution. The Regional Chairman had said then that efforts would be made to beef up security.
