Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development on Friday inked several contracts to the tune of $650M to commence infrastructural works in several Regions.
According to the Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Anand Persaud, the contracts inked includes the rehabilitation of five Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) buildings across the country: $11.9M issued to Leguan NDC in Region Three; $5.3M to Black Bush Polder NDC in Region Six; $5.4M to Canefield/Enterprise NDC in Region Six; $4M issued to No. 52/74 Village in Region Three; and $8M to Aberdeen/ Zorg-en-Vlugt in Region Two.
Additionally, $48.3M was issued to Esplanade Park in Region Six; $38.5M to Byderado in Region Seven; $120M for the rehabilitation of Haags-Bosch Municipal landfill in Region Four; $78.8M issued for the Leachate Treatment Facility and an additional $329M was allocated to Haags Bosch landfill.
The Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall, stated, “The signing ceremony is a significant one since it signals government’s commitment to the enhancement of communities through solid waste management and that the intention is also to improve economic livelihood by engaging local contractors when undertaking community enhancement projects so as to spread the resources around.”
Additionally, Persaud cautioned the contractors to ensure value for money, stressing that the government is keen on ensuring projects are infrastructurally sound. He also pointed out that contractors will be blacklisted for shoddy work, adding that the NDCs would be engaged to act as watchdogs of project works in their communities.
