DEAR EDITOR,
I am an avid follower of politics in Guyana, although I hardly comment. One of the issues that caught my attention was the recent controversy around that of Guyana’s Vote at the UN General Assembly on the Durban Declaration.
While a number of political commentators proffered that the “No” vote was deliberate and an indication that the PPP/C was a racist cabal bent on the suppression of Afro-Guyanese, I watched how AWD, who has shadowing responsibility for Foreign Affairs handled the matter.
She presented the facts to Guyana, complete with timelines. Though the line taken by many in her circle took the position that the PPP/C deliberately voted in this manner, she steadfastly refused to say that it was a deliberate vote despite being asked pointedly on several programmes on which she appeared.
What is interesting is that Vice-President Jagdeo while being interviewed by the media personality Critic, referred to her statement as corroborating the position that there was a “mixup”.
Were she the racist with the racist agenda that the PPP/C and their acolytes are now in a frenzy to paint her, I doubt she would have passed up on such a golden opportunity to further that agenda.
Regards,
Andrea Bristol
