Beauty and Braids by Sapphira…
Kaieteur News – Many persons have launched businesses based on their childhood passions and dreams; however, many have also seen themselves taking years to have these dreams come to past.
This week’s ‘Young entrepreneur on the move’ is an 18-year-old who refused to simply wait on her turn and took a strong-headed approach to pursue her dream of establishing her own hairstyling and beauty business.
Sapphira Aeisha Barrington, is the owner of Beauty and Braids by Sapphira, a business that has been trending on social media. With her business, Barrington offers mostly braiding, hair locking and other protective styles, and her clients are easy to distinguish. In her exclusive interview with Kaieteur News, the remarkable and vibrant teen recalled that while growing up, she was always obsessed with hair and makeup.
She’d always request makeup sets for her birthday and would steadily change her hairstyles, since she loved styling her hair.
Eventually, she capitalised on the wide array of tutorials available on YouTube and continued practising. She would even practise on her family members when they asked her to style their hair, “just for fun.” Barrington stated that in 2018, she attended a braiding class at Kevin’s Reflections and then in 2020, she did a makeup course with a popular local makeup artist, Decarla Hodge, and a nail technician course with another popular local nail technician.
She officially launched her company with an open mind on August 6, 2020, offering hair styling services. Sapphira indicated that in the near future, she intends to expand her business by providing makeup and nail technician services. She was keen to note that what sets her apart from other persons in the business is her personality. “…I treat my customers the way I believe I should be treated when going to a salon,” she said with pride. It is no secret that with owning a business, one can encounter several obstacles, however, for Barrington, her challenges were minuscule.
She admitted that her line of business can sometimes be seasonal, for example, in the Christmas season, business would be booming, but in January month, it slows; then in February, it may pick up again in light of the Mashramani holiday.
Despite her seasonal challenges, she noted that her business is doing great. “I did not expect the amount of support I get to be honest. It took a little while to start my business because I was scared I would not get the support,” the 18-year-old recalled. On that note, she highlighted the need for society to be more supportive of small businesses. “I think young entrepreneurs are an inspiration to people in society, not only young people but adults.
Also they inspire people to put their skills to use and they give society an economic boost by creating employment not only for themselves but others,” she posited. In her bid to see the rise of more small businesses locally, she said, “Small businesses can come together and show each other love and support instead of fighting each other down. That can aid in boosting their businesses.” She noted too that reducing certain barriers in kick-starting a business is also important, especially access to easy financing in light of the “the high interest rates on business loans and the long and drawn out process you have to go through when you’re taking the loan.” She believes that if society starts pouring support into small businesses or business owners that are not popular, more businesses would be able to flourish. “I know a lot of people who really have talent and they don’t get support because they are not popular or they don’t have a certain status in society and that’s not right,” Barrington added. She is quite certain that she can and will make a mark in the beauty industry and will continue to have her charming personality reflected in her services.
