Kaieteur News – The Gary St Clair Superhero fight night Promotions is planning to stage a pulsating International Boxing card in Guyana which could be shown on a Pay-per-view channel.
According to St Clair, speaking from his home in Sydney, Australia, the planning for this mega Event is in its infancy stages and if all goes well, including approval for the Ministry of Health and Covid-19 Task Force, USA based Eton Dharry and Dexter Marques are expected to feature on the main and supporting bouts respectively with both fighting for World titles.
Last Saturday morning (midnight in Australia) Sinclair, President of the Guyana Boxing Board Peter Abdool and Minister of Culture, Youth & Sports Charles Ramson discussed the staging of the Event during a ‘Zoom’ meeting with the Minister.
“The meeting went well. It was such a pleasure the meet Minister Charles Ramson and am grateful that he took time out from his busy schedule to have a causal conversation with us.
Mr Ramson is very supportive of this upcoming promotion and said that he is looking forward to working with the Gary Sinclair Superhero fight night promotion,” said Sinclair from Sydney.
“It was also a pleasure to have the company of Mr Abdool and I thank him for his testimony of my character to the Minister,” added Sinclair, who represented Guyana in the 1994 Commonwealth Games before turning professional later that year.
The possible venue for the Pro/Am card could be the Providence Stadium.
Plans are also in place for a rated Venezuelan to battle Marques in contest dubbed…not a blade of Grass, while Dharry could come up against a Brazilian.
Owner of the Gary St Clair Boxing and Fitness Gym in Sydney Australia, the 46-year-old is one of six Guyanese boxers (including two females) to win world titles.
He is last one to do so when he defeated Cassius Baloyai in South Africa in July 2016 to claim the IBO and IBF World Super featherweight title.
“The Objective is to set up discussions with the directors of Ansa McAl, Banks DIH, DDL, the Oil Companies operating in Guyana, the Guyana Government and the Tourism Industry.
The reason for this is to prepare our promotion group to alert these Megga Companies of our plan to televise pay-per-view in the main Guyanese diaspora.
These places would be Miami, New York, Toronto, London and the Caribbean,” informed Sinclair, who has a pro record of 60 bouts, 46 wins, 18 KOs, with 12 losses and two draws.
The Guyana Boxing Board President is optimistic that with the pandemic out of the way we have a chance to take the sport of boxing to a world class level, the airline industry will flourish and our Country will be talked about long after the Event.
Abdool informed that Minister Ramson feels that the card could be held by September since he says by then most of the population should be vaccinated for the covid-19 pandemic.
“The meeting was very promising for the Boxing Board in terms of getting title fights back to Guyana and resurrecting our Friday night fights. We were asked to send all the details including a budget and the Boxing Board is in full support of this venture which should rekindle the interest in Professional Boxing in Guyana,” posited the GBB President.
Both Dharry and Marques confirmed having verbal discussions about the proposed Event with St Clair.
