Kaieteur News – Ten underprivileged families in Berbice were recently given home ownership certificates by Food For The Poor (FFTP) Guyana together with the St. Francis’ Community Developers NGO. Both NGOs who have worked together for a number of years have managed to put smiles on the faces of families every year and this time around has given sixteen adults and forty-two children a chance to start afresh in their new homes.
Those who received certificates of home ownership are families from Rose Hall Town, Letter Kenny, New Amsterdam, Glasgow Housing Scheme and Fort Ordinance. They are families that come from various backgrounds and circumstances, but according to Alex Foster, CEO of the St Francis NGO “all fit the criteria to get these houses.” He further stated that Food For The Poor is looking to “move in another direction,” meaning that the NGO is now working hand in hand with these families to enhance whatever skills they possess.
Foster said that FFTP has since committed to assisting the families in acquiring tools “to boost what they are doing.”
So far, to date 360 houses have been completed, with the 2021 target set at completing 10 houses per month. Foster stated that 70 houses have been approved so far, with the year’s target set at 120 houses.
He explained, “We are behind schedule because of the unpredictable weather situation, but we are trying to get the best out of those who are available. We are working with families who have four children or more.” The homes are each equipped with an indoor toilet and bath, two beds, table and four chairs along with two steps.
“We have taken out wooden windows and are now installing louvre windows. Every house will have two beds, a table and four chairs, gas stove, solar panel et cetera,” Foster said.
