As the sun rises peacefully in the East and sets magnificently in the West, the North blows hot and cold to cause the dust to remain unsettled in the South. Garth Stein wrote in “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” “I suddenly realized. The zebra. It is not something outside of us. The zebra is something inside of us. Our fears. Our own self-destructive nature. The zebra is the worst part of us when we are face-to-face with our worst times. The demon is us.” The decisions we make are either violent or peaceful, destructive or constructive, useless or profitable, wrong or right. Man becomes self-destructive or is annihilated by nature over a period of time. History is saddled with the devastation of wars from time immemorial and there is no beginning to its end nor any means to curb its finality. Recent pronouncements have further attested to this and have underlined its pervading significance. The ruthless attack on Capitol Hill in America on January 6th leaving five deaths and hundreds injured explores the vulnerability of this weakness, and the destructive earthquake in Indonesia on January 15th, which caused over 40 deaths and 800 injured, is a reminder of the force of what lies beyond man’s control. Again, 62 people died as a result of a plane crash on January 9th in Indonesia, a living proof of man’s limitation. Donald Trump departed from the White House on January 20th to reflect that nothing is permanent, paving the way for Joe Biden to occupy the seat of Presidency, an assertion that, “honesty is the best policy.” Amanda Gorman, the young US poet laureate, writes, “ there is always light,” to portray that there is a right way to pursue, while US Vice President, Kamala Harris, the Black/Asian/American, illustrates, “if you’re brown, stick around,” dignifies a reason to defend and not to offend.
In Guyana, the Henry boys’ deaths paint a picture of the unending violence and the dangers of drugs, pointing out that the beast is within and without; Fitzgerald F. Scott wrote in “The Great Gatsby,” “I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” The ultimate arrest of the murderers is a hint that the arms of the law are long, maybe slow but sure. Haresh Singh’s retributive murder remains an unsolved mystery, but his death sourly indicates that politicians will use and abuse fools as tools to do their dirty job. The diabolic inciters are as large as Trump and publicly flaunt the law, openly parading and challenging the keepers of dignity and morality. Michael Sherwin, the acting US Attorney for D.C., repeatedly told reporters that his office would be investigating and potentially charging “all actors” involved in the riot at Capitol Hill. A federal prosecutor investigating the riots said he would not close the door to investigating and charging President Trump for his inciting comments to the crowd of protestors.
The quick processing of the US election petitions surmise that freedom of speech is guaranteed in their judiciary system, but more so, the decisions from the courts, including the Supreme Court, underscore that, justice and fairness will not be stifled to satisfy the rich and famous, or, the whims and fancy of the high and mighty. The PPP/C election petition from 2015 is unheard of, yet, the APNU+AFC election petition from 2020 is currently engaging the attention of the officials and one of the petitions has already been dismissed. Justice delayed is justice denied and so the cry for efficiency is an effective tool to remedy the limitations and bottlenecks of the current courts. Former US Attorney General, William Barr, resigned from his post with over a month left with the Trump’s administration, suggesting that he no longer wanted to tarnish his reputation with pro-Trump shenanigans that could irretrievably tarnish his legacy. It was a correct judgmental call, perhaps foreseeing the past insurrection. On the contrary, Guyana witnessed the past attorney in complicit with questionable legitimate advice to a weak president and incapacitating the process of wise decisions. For the stubborn APNU+AFC government to be clean bowled in a hat trick by the learned Caribbean Court of Justice, exposes the fragility and literacy of their legal advisors. But then, Trump and Granger are synonymous with lies and deceits. Shame and disgrace are not easily erased.
Is there a special garrison for the likes of Rawlston, Patterson and Ferguson? Perhaps, the gift voucher might have been used with the intention of a visit to Madison Square Garden had it not been for a sanction (COVID-19 or ?)! How long will you play hide and seek, the sun will eventually catch up with you. This is a clear-cut case, which exemplifies the audacity of the APNU+AFC government’s corruption saga. Play not with the righteous parson; he will direct the guilty person to the right prison! Leaving a defecating trail of obnoxious financial transactions, the APNU+AFC government did enjoy the good life at the expense of the poor taxpaying public. How can a liar and denier, guilty of dishonesty and moral etiquette question transparency, challenge aberrancy or query complacency? But then, the APNU+AFC Party does represent everything callous, sacrilegious, devious and unscrupulous! By the way, is the Integrity Commission back from their yearlong holiday? Isn’t their hibernation period over? Talk about throwing good money down the drain, or is it, throwing water on duck’s back? The honourable Attorney General and the Auditor General need to take a peek and see if that body is sleeping on the job! Whatever happened to all those goodly gentlemen and ladies who did not submit their declarations for 2019? Why, this does tells us of the integrity of the Integrity Commission! Wake up; this is Year 2021 under President Dr. Irfaan Ali, not David Granger! Why is it the ERC, GHRA, the Integrity Commission, GECOM and others have to be prompted to do their job?
In New York last Wednesday, during a medical evacuation exercise, a chopper crashed killing three National Guard Members. Loyalty to their jobs brought them their demise. In Guyana, for many politicians, loyalty to indignity brings them much royalty. The giving away of our lands and natural resources is a season with greedy reason. Is there a comparison between treason and a liaison, which is crimson? Also on Wednesday, a traffic cop was struck down in the line of duty along the Houston, Public Road, EBD. A young father was unlucky the same day, killed when he was involved in an accident on the Mc Doom Public Road, EBD. These incidents help to identify the recklessness and carelessness of users on the roads of Guyana. Where lies the blame for the overall picture in Guyana? Pointing a finger doesn’t help, because there are three fingers pointing backwards. At the end of the day, each of us is definitely a contributing factor. The question is, can we accept the truth by being honest with ourselves? Now that our conscience is bothering us, can we sleep peacefully and restfully, knowing that the truth hurts? Perhaps, we can do something, stand up for what is right and speak out against what is wrong! Come out from the shade of the dark and find the light.
