Dear Editor,
Each year we observe ‘Road Traffic Week’ but it all goes down just like nothing ever happened. Our greatest problems to my mind seem to be road engineering and traffic law enforcement.
Roads that were made many years ago to accommodate animal drawn vehicles and pedestrians have not made a successful transition to motorized vehicles’ daily use.
Our country seems left in an ancient time when we consider our traffic situation. Even the new roads serve up great problems. No sooner are new roads opened that we find them not being able to accommodate the expected traffic properly. Our planners and engineers lack vision and insight.
Let’s check the Grove district. Here we find the space that should have been left for future road widening fully occupied, thus making any widening an impossible task. Sidewalks are few and non-existent in many areas thus we find that pedal cyclists, pedestrians and, yes, animals jostle for space on our roadways.
The baying of the politicians when in and out of government does not help, but serves to intensify our traffic woes.
The proposed new harbour bridge for Peter’s Hall is a disaster in the making. This bridge is best sited at New Hope since this will give us a better chance of constructing new access and bypass roads making for easier flow of traffic in and out of Georgetown.
Our traffic laws call for the proper identification of all vehicular traffic. Yet for all this we find electric motor bikes, ATVs and motorized assisted bikes being operated without licence plates. Doubt whether any of those I have seen carry third party insurance which is a legal requirement for such vehicles. Whereas the law speaks to a fixed white light being in front of vehicles, many of them these days sport headlights of varying colours.
It is high time the competent authority gets serious concerning the observance of traffic laws and the design of proper roads and associated aids to road traffic. ‘Road Traffic Week’ observances must in future announce to us the achievements of road and road traffic improvements and not the recitation of grim statistics.
