Guyana’s 400m Indoor record holder; Arinze Chance, is relishing the opportunity to compete at the 2021 World Indoor Championships which will be held from March 19-21 in Nanjing, China.
The United States based sprinter is the leading men’s 400m competitor from Guyana with his world rank being higher than seasoned quarter-miler Winston George.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG); Aubrey Hutson, in an invited comment, revealed that once an athlete qualifies for a major international championship, his body ensures that the athlete gets to compete and he confirmed that the AAG will send Chance to the Games, once he is willing to compete.
Chance, who recently graduated from the University of South Carolina, qualified for the 2020 World Indoor Championships which was scheduled for March this year but has been postponed to March 2021 after running a blistering time of 46.15s to better Jermaine Griffith’s 46.95s to become the Indoor 400m men’s record holder.
The time was registered just days before his 23rd birthday (January 20) and the now 24-year-old shared with this publication that he is upbeat about competing in the first major competition in 2021 after a challenging period of inaction due to the pandemic.
“If I do well there (at the indoor championships) it will be a big confidence booster for my Olympic preparations. Many people don’t realize that Track is an individual sport and any bit of form or confidence can go a long way. More importantly, I can only go faster from running among fast people and although I have been training hard during the pandemic, there is no substitute for competition”, Chance iterated.
When quizzed on the possibility of the Indoor Championships being delayed, Chance was very optimistic that would not occur. He cited the IOC announcing that the rescheduled Tokyo Games will run off regardless of the amount of cases of Covid-19 and he also referenced major league sports such as the NBA and European football that have been able to successfully restart with strict guidelines.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s leading women’s 400m athlete; Aliyah Abrams, has also qualified for the World Indoor Championships.
