The recent comments by Ethnic Relations Commision member Hajji Roshan Khan as it relates to the recent events in Berbice are irresponsible, incendiary and unacceptable of any Guyanese, much less a member of the Ethnic Relations Commission.
The ERC has since distanced itself from these comments and we urge the Muslim community to withdraw its nomination of Mr. Khan and/or demand Mr. Khan’s resignation from the ERC. We also urge the ERC to immediately review the utterances of Mr. Khan and to censure him accordingly, as these comments are contrary to a number of the Commission’s 24 constitutional functions.
While there have been many unfortunate, ill-advised and divisive statements from leaders in both the PPP and PNC, Mr. Khan should be held to a higher standard as a Commissioner of a constitutional body with a mandate to counter the very type of sentiments that he has deposited into the public domain. Utterances of the nature Mr. Khan has made betrays the trust placed in him as the ERC representative of our brothers and sister who practice Islam.
