A Guyanese mom died tragically yesterday in St. Maarten, a Dutch oversea territory while fishing.
Her husband, also a Guyanese, was saved but he was dashed to a hospital for injuries.
Dead is Andrea Singh, said to be in her 30s and a mother of two young children. She hails from Yakusari, Black Bush Polder, Berbice. She had been living in St. Maarten for about two decades.
St. Maarten is located next to St. Kitts and Nevis, in the Caribbean
According to a statement from the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard, it yesterday morning received a notice from the St. Maarten police that persons were “in a drowning situation in the water at Back Bay”.
The woman reportedly fell into the water after a wave surge swept her away.
She had gone fishing early with her husband, Vish Singh, also said to be from Guyana.
Her partner jumped into the water in an attempt to help her but was unable to get near her.
A fisherman who was nearby saw what happened and contacted authorities.
He threw his cooler into the water and the husband managed to use it to scramble back to safety.
The Coast Guard vessel was dispatched to the location where they found the woman unconscious in the water.
According to the Coast Guard, they took the woman to the pier at Great Bay where an ambulance was waiting.
“There the paramedics and Coast Guard personnel gave CPR to the victim, but sadly she had already passed away. The St. Maarten Sea Rescue patrol had also sailed to the site to assist the Fire Department personnel with retrieving her wounded partner to an area where paramedics were able to treat him and where the ambulance took him to the Sint Maarten Medical center.”
The woman and husband, a contractor, were said to be doing well and involving in the apartment rental business on the island, a popular tourist destination.
The Daily Herald reported that St. Maarten is under a small craft and high surf advisory until 6:00am Monday.
According to the Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) morning forecast on Saturday, the seas were expected to be between six and 10 feet high.
