Khalifa Hale; a Cadet Officer attached to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), has developed a sports plan for Guyana which will cover ways in which to better market the different disciplines inclusive of cricket, football, table tennis, chess, etc.
During an interview with Kaieteur Sport, Hale explained that that he has been working on the document for some six months now and he got the inspiration from many years of observing sports in Guyana locally as an avid fan.
Hale, who has been actively organising sports within the GPS and joint services for the past five years, explained that the main objective of his ‘sports plan’ is to help local athletes earn while competing.
In addition, Hale emphasised that his sports plan will create an environment conducive for investors to see returns on their investment while the State will also benefit.
The law enforcement officer disclosed that newly appointed minister of sport, Charles Ramson Jr. expressed his non-belief in the practicability of his plan but vowed to assist in any way possible if he manages to secure investors that are most pivotal in seeing the plan become a reality.
Hale didn’t do any consultations with the various sports associations/federations in Guyana but he posited that he received positive feedback from the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) when the finished product was presented to the association.
When quizzed upon his thoughts about the National Sports Policy draft that has been in circulation for a while, Hale explained that he wasn’t too familiar with the document.
Hale is set to make approaches to varying stakeholders to put forward his plan and drum up the necessary support to bring it to fruition.
