One person has died and four others severely injured in a car crash which took place yesterday along the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Dead is Quamie Dalton, 24, a minibus conductor of Ice House Road, Timehri.
The fatal crash occurred at around 02:00Hrs while Dalton and his friends were heading home in a car from a birthday party in Supply. Police said that the car was travelling at a fast rate when the driver struck a median, lost control and veered off the road crashing into a light pole before toppling several times.According to eyewitnesses the car was speeding down the wrong side of the public road and then made a sudden dash for the right side slamming a light pole in the process. The car then rode up a sand heap, sailed through the air and landed on a small minibus parked at the side of the road.
Nearby residents rushed out to scene to render assistance. An unconscious Dalton and his friends were removed from the wreckage and an ambulance was called to transport them to the Diamond Diagnostic Center.
At the hospital, doctors labeled Dalton as critical, treated him and placed him on a life support machine while his friends received treatment and were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). At around 06:00Hrs Dalton succumbed to his injuries.
The driver, who received minor injuries, is in police custody and according to a source has told investigators that the car suffered a tire blow-out.
