DEAR EDITOR,
The dark clouds over Guyana washed away to reveal the brilliance of a sky hitherto unseen, the same applies to life when it is comprehensibly understood.
As a Guyanese citizen and artist, I have been working for some time on a ten feet sculpture of our Rich Cultural Heritage, a symbol dedicated to Peace, Justice and National Reconciliation. It is made of Purple Heart wood and Symbolically painted.
For 19 months Guyana has been under siege with racial tension and animosity conjured up to achieve political ends, compounded by the lockdown to contain the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.
Our greatest need is to respect the fundamental rights of our people to improve conditions of life, access to proper health care, education, opportunities, etc. Respect for our cultural heritage and cultural workers, early signs would signal our serious intention of addressing the burning issue of National Reconciliation.
For years grass-root artists with no affiliation to the ruling parties of the day have been held in contempt and given no support, many of our senior artists have left Guyana for greener pastures, the tale of those who remained, who have served this country with distinction is dreadfully painful, as in the cases of Winston Strick, Peter Edwards, Charlie, Rodrick and most recently Osaze, all of them died in abject poverty.
The cultural symbol for peace, justice and national reconciliation will be on display shortly in Main Street, Georgetown.
The Guyana United Artists (GUA) takes this opportunity to congratulate President Ali and the People’s Progressive Party on yet another opportunity to do what is right, to Govern Guyana in the interest and welfare of All Guyanese. God Bless Guyana!
Yours faithfully,
Desmond Alli
(General Secretary Guyana United Artists)
