Investigations into the death of Rickford Newton, 19, revealed that the teen plunged to his demise in the Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
Newton of Byderabo, Bartica died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday last while receiving treatment for fatal injuries he had sustained during a football match.
Initial reports stated that the teen injured himself severely at Armu Backdam, Cuyuni on July 3rd when he jumped to receive a pass.
He was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital in a critical condition and was air-dashed to GPHC.
Doctors at GPHC conducted a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and found that Newton suffered a fractured skull, neck and a broken left arm. The teen subsequently succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy conducted on his body revealed that Newton’s death was caused by a fractured spine.
However, family members suggested that Newton might have been murdered.
To bring closure to the case, police decided to visit the scene yesterday to ascertain the correct circumstances surrounding the teen’s demise.
Investigators learnt that Newton was indeed involved in a football match with some Venezuelan women. The ball somehow got away and fell into the Cuyuni River nearby.
The teen then ran and plunged into the river to retrieve the football.
Persons who witnessed the incident said he went under the water and resurfaced faced down and motionless.
His friends rushed into the river to assist him and discovered that he was unconscious and bleeding from the head.
They pulled him from the water and made arrangements for him to be transported to the hospital right away.
Upon a closer look at the area where Newton had plunged, investigators found that it was a shallow part of the river laded with a rock bed.
