Dear Editor,
I write this letter hoping that it will get the attention of our President, members of his party, the opposition, GECOM officials and all others who have an input in the solution to our political crisis.
Our nation is going through self-inflicting challenging times, and a challenge always results in a winner and loser. Some people who are considered wise take on challenges that they cannot win and this includes royalty and leaders of nation.
For example, before Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of England, contracted coronavirus he boastfully said “I shake hands with everybody. I was in the hospital the other night and there were a few coronavirus cases and I shook hands with everybody.” Prince Charles did not boast but, as royalty, he continues to mix with and shake hands with everyone and we all know that they both tested positive. Mr. Johnson ended in ICU.
Hugh Crosskill of Jamaica rose to prominence at the early age of 18 but lost the challenge to hard drugs and was shot at the age of 47 by a security guard. Brenda Nyhan, a health policy researcher of the University of Michigan and Jason Reifier, a political scientist at the University of Georgia, published a paper documenting that, when people are presented with verifiable facts and history that contradicts firm beliefs (hence opinions), the facts often fail to convince otherwise. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as research have found that when people are given facts that refute erroneous opinions, many people actually become further entrenched in their incorrect views, hence the notion “a man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still and there is no one so blind like the one who does not want to see.”
Nyhan went on to conclude that “most people don’t seek out information to challenge their beliefs: more often than not, they look for “evidence” to support their own views.
When I discovered that I had prostate cancer a few years, instead of challenging this big C, I surrendered to 45 daily radiations and I decided to look for the best way to travel though this challenge and decided to use the opportunity to encourage myself, fellow patients and medical staff. At the conclusion, I saw every day as a precious gift from God for more opportunities to be a blessing to others. I will be extremely foolish to spurn God’s mercy and take His extended time for granted because if I have to face another challenge, I don’t know how I will explain ingratitude.
We suffered under slavery and indentureship but since independence our political leaders choose to rule and divide instead of using the opportunity to lead and heal the nation. Why are our own bringing us back to those dark days? The election revealed a lot, which is too embarrassing to mention, but I want to inform our leaders that our actions are a direct challenge to God’s holy standards, and we are going to reap the consequences.
The reality of life can be best explained in God’s word. Galatians 6: 7 says, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, will reap destruction. The one who sows to please God, will reap eternal life.” Proverbs 29:1 outlines that “A man who chooses to be stubborn after many rebukes, will suddenly be cut off without remedy or a second chance”. I conclude by sharing Hebrews 10: 31: “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Yours truly,
Harold Beharry
