Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter with deep concern for something has been happening with a disturbing frequency in the West Canefield, Canje area – house break-ins by young thieves.
This has been happening before the sugar estate closure, before the election results stalemate and before the coronavirus and continues amidst these events. These young men have made a career for themselves as robbers as it is easy money to fund their drug habits and it is said that their families get a part of the loot. That is one of the reasons why when the police would pick them up for questioning, their mothers cry and beg for them.
They are sly and seem to have an art for it as they can enter houses in the most creative ways, such as sliding through very small spaces like lizards. Their targets tend to be houses, which occupants have gone on a vacation, out for a weekend or even a night. The settlement has no streetlights, no one has security cameras or alarm systems and I am unsure how often the police patrols drive through the streets late in the night. Due to these absences, these notorious thugs have ample time to ransack and rob people’s homes.
I am living in Georgetown but I have a country home that I have been maintaining at good costs because I always visit Berbice for weddings, funerals, charity work and literary presentations, so a country home is useful for me. My home was broken into and when I got there on Saturday 18th April, 2020 to assess the situation, it broke my heart to see the damages and losses. It’s a very bad situation that the police needs to look into very closely so others can be deterred from continuing this trend of house robberies. Such acts seriously disrupt one’s comfort and convenience, not to mention the heart-breaking losses, many of which have deep sentimental value along with its monetary worth.
These young men are capable of obtaining decent jobs and contributing something meaningful to their lives, families and society, rather than engaging in robberies to steal and resell others’ possessions, which they have worked tirelessly for. It is my hope that this trend could be curtailed and even seized to occur.
Thank you.
