DEAR EDITOR,
The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is campaigning on the points of restoring the water and light subsidies for our pensioners and the return of the $10,000 cash grant for our school children. These two programmes that the PPP/C had were ill-conceived and instead of benefiting the recipients, mass confusion was created.
First, during the time of the PPP/C in Government a great percentage of our senior citizens were not benefiting from the services of GWI and GPL which simply means that they never received that $9,000 yearly water subsidy and that $20,000 yearly electricity subsidy. Only a small percentage of our senior citizens benefited. How unfortunate for the seniors who all toiled in the Guyana soil for a better Guyana for all.
The APNU+AFC fixed this disparity and now all senior citizens are equally receiving a pension package of $20,500.
I call on right minded Guyanese to examine the figures. Under the PPP/C Government, Uncle Sam and Aunty Pat used to get a pension of $7,500 each per month which is $15,000 a month for both of them. For one year it is $15,000 x 12 months = $180,000. With the $9,000 yearly water subsidy and $20,000 yearly electricity subsidy, Uncle Sam and Aunty Pat had a pension package of $209,000. Again, remember that not all pensioners were lucky to get the water and electricity subsidies so a great percentage of senior folks only got a yearly benefit of $180,000 and in the case of one pensioner a benefit of $90,000.
The APNU+AFC Government fixed this unfair and unjustified programme. The APNU+AFC is giving all pensioners regardless of where they live and who they live with a total of $20,500. So Uncle Sam and Aunty Pat are now receiving a yearly pension package of ($20,500 x 2 = $41,000 per month x by 12 months) = $492,000. Pensioners beware of sweet lies and be guided by facts. The APNU+AFC showed that they cared in just 4 ½ years. A second term of David Granger will guarantee an even better package for all.
My grandmother and grandfather understand this clearly and they indicated to me that their vote is for the APNU+AFC. They agree that for Guyana to shine, David needs some time.
Yours faithfully,
Ganesh Mahipaul
