DEAR EDITOR,
I am baffled by the logic of the Guyana Elections Commission to revise the list of polling stations mere days before elections. What is even more disturbing is the fact that the decision was made without the knowledge of the opposition-nominated Commissioners.
Such a decision does not speak well of the stated commitment of GECOM to conduct the elections in an efficient and smooth manner. Most voters including myself already had a fair knowledge of where to vote based on past experience. To now change the places of poll is not only logistically upsetting but could be a recipe for confusion and chaos on elections day. Moreover, why at this late hour make changes to a polling system that for all practical purposes worked well in past elections?
GECOM has reportedly stated that the decision taken was based on a recommendation made earlier by the Carter Centre to minimize the use of private residences as polling places. I am sure the Carter Centre would not wish to be associated with any decision that could result in any form of chaos or voter suppression. I think in the interest of clarity and context the Carter Centre should clarify its position on this matter.
It is not too late for GECOM to revert to the previous list which was released to the Commissioners and by extension the voting public.
