DEAR EDITOR,
In early October 2019, a wire transfer was made to my savings account. When I checked my account via Telebanking the sum that was there was less than expected, so the next day, October 8, I visited the Republic Bank branch on Water Street.
I spoke with a teller who produced a printout of the transactions that occurred with this account. From the printout, I saw that on October 7, a few days after the wire transfer was deposited, some charges were made from this account which I did not make and was unaware of. The sum of GY $3,685.82 was taken 6 times – six separate charges – totaling $22,114.92. From the printout, the payments were purportedly made to a company.
I informed the teller that I was not responsible for those charges and was advised to contact the company to get a refund. This company is based overseas, so I contacted it on Live chat and we moved to emails. After a week of back and forth emails, the company informed me that it found no record of the charges, did not have my card number on file, and advised me to dispute the charges with the bank.
In mid-October, I visited the Republic Bank branch on Water Street again where I disputed the charges, and was informed that after an investigation by the bank if it is found that I was not responsible for the charges then I will receive a refund.
To date, I have not received this refund and I have visited the bank several times about it. On each occasion I wasted many hours, waiting only to repeat the same story and be told that I would get a call from the bank to follow up. I never received any of the promised “follow up” calls.
Time is money and the amount of time I have already wasted on this matter is worth more than the money taken from my account.
I am appealing to Republic Bank to refund the monies taken from my account without my input and consent. It is a very petty amount for this mega bank to refund; the bank needs to do a quick investigation of the matter and stop treating customers like beggars.
Yours faithfully,
Narissa Deokarran
