Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, on Saturday announced that Guyana is in discussion with Suriname to build a bridge across the Corentyne River to link the two countries.
According to the Minister, “In September, I met with the Minister of Public Works from Suriname and we have agreed that one of the priority projects between Guyana and Suriname would be a bridge across the Corentyne River.”
At present, the only way to Suriname is to cross the Corentyne River via boat.
Minister Patterson added that Suriname is equally interested in this project as Guyana.
He told the residents in Orealla, Region Six, that the construction of this bridge will not only open doors for tourism but also commerce in the Region. In this regard, he urged the residents to prepare for huge business growth.
The Minister was at the time speaking in Orealla during the commissioning ceremony for a new Stelling. The structure was completed by Ministry of Public Infrastructure to the tune of $39.4M.
Timber and most of the other materials were supplied by the village. The new structure will make travelling easier and safer for residents and tourists visiting the village.
During brief remarks at the opening ceremony, Minister Patterson said he was quite pleased with the works done as he described the project as a significant one. (MPI)
