The score read 97-73 when the final buzzer was sounded on Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) to conclude the match and the three-game Goodwill basketball series between hosts Guyana’s senior men’s team and the swept visiting Grenada national side.
In Sunday’s final match, British Virgin Islands (BVI) based Ray Victor (17 points), Nikolai Smith (16 points) of Plaisance Guardians and Travis Belgrave (15 points) of Eagles basketball club were the top performers for the Guyanese that managed to score 90-odd points in all three of the games, while Jonathan Williams was the top man for Grenada again with 18 points in a losing effort.
The reigning Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) men’s Champions; Guyana, prevailed despite using an arguably weakened team that were without the services of Skipper Stanton Rose, Vice-Captain Anthony Moe and Kevon Wiggins who are all overseas based.
It will be seen as a step in the right direction for Guyana by the coach Junior Hercules, who led the team to their first title in 2017 in Suriname; a long wait after John Yates pioneered the inaugural tourney in 1981 at CASH, after a disappointing show in their first appearance in the FIBA Americas qualifiers in Colombia last February.
The Goodwill series was part of the team’s preparations for their regional title defence next year that stands a good chance of being hosted in ‘land of many waters’ after head of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Mike Singh stated during a press conference that his association will be bidding for the hosting rights.
