A superb all-round performance from Thaddeus Lovell guided Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) a two-wicket victory over Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) when the teams collided in the final of the Georgetown Cricket Association/ Toucan Distributors U15 50-over final yesterday.
Lovell picked up four wickets to help bowl out DCC for 158 before returning with the bat to score a fine half century to lead his team to victory at Queenstown.
Opener Jadan Campbell and Romeo Deonarain added 32 for the opening stand before Deonarain was removed by Krsna Singh for nine which included one four after DCC were inserted. Jaden Dowlin was then bowled by Mavindra Dindyal for two before Campbell and Premkumar Permaul put on 27 for the third-wicket stand. Dindyal trapped Permaul lbw for 11, while Campbell, who faced 63 balls and struck six fours and one six in a top score of 48, was caught at the wicket off Lovell, leaving DCC on 87-4.
Jonathan Van Lange struck two fours before he fell to Lovell for 11, while Dindyal had Shaquan Walters lbw for nine. Jeremiah Mohabir struck one four in scoring 19 off 44 balls to prop up the total somewhat, while Lovell picked up the remaining wickets as the home team were bowled out in 44.1 overs. Extras contributed 30; Lovell grabbed 4-42 from 9.1 overs, while Dindyal took 3-37.
Opener Shaahid Viera (01) was run out before leg spinner Deonarain had Dindyal caught and bowled for seven as GCC were reduced to 26-2 in the seventh over.
However, Lovell and Zachary Jodah stabilised the chase nicely with a third wicket stand of 85. While Lovell was his usual attacking self, Jodah was content to rotate the strike as the pair frustrated their opponents with level-headed batting. Lovell stroked six fours and three sixes in scoring 61 off 75 balls before he was caught off Joshua Walcott, while Jodah was taken off Wavell Allen for 27 off 59 balls with two fours.
Following their separation, DCC brought themselves back into the contest by picking up a few quick wickets including that of Singh for 14, however, Jeremiah Singh (05*) ensured GCC crossed the line as they finished on 159-8 in 44.1 overs. Kareem Caesar was the pick of the bowlers with 2-14.
Lovell was named man-of-the-match, while Jaden Campbell (111) was the highest run scorer in the competition, Jaden Dowlin (09) was the highest wicket taker while Dindyal had the highest individual score (67).
