Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN), a private school located in Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, was acknowledged by the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) for their continuous support in donation of blood to the blood bank not merely for this year’s contribution but over the years.

At the top is previous students supporting the drive and at left of the bottom is a continuous donor, Guy Gittens.

Medical personnel from the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) conducting the donation process of the blood drive.
SVN donated a total of 649 units of blood, where a blood drive held in May produced 347 units of blood. The private school hosted a second blood drive on October 19 and October 20, last, to commemorate the Diwali celebrations, which produced 302 units of blood.
This gives a total of 649 units of blood for this year.
As such, the NBTS is appreciative to the principal and co-ordinator in the efforts to recruit donors and for their kind hospitality during the blood drive.
NBTS also stated that it is looking forward for SVN’s support in future. NBTS told this publication that it welcomes and would like to see other organisations taking this initiative.
NBTS noted that the blood bank needs a consistent demand for blood. There is no prediction as to when patients would need it. The shelf life of blood is not long. NBTS highlighted that the principal, Swami Aksharananda executed the initiative of an annual blood drive that supports the blood bank for years and the bank was very grateful.
Kaieteur News understands that the activity is organised and carried out by the students of the school as well as the teachers with the assistance of the Cornelia Ida Temple Community.
This Diwali blood drive was coordinated by Narindra Persaud, a current teacher who was also a student of the school. He related that the school took the initiative to host a blood drive twice per year since 2012 to aid the demand of blood of the country, and more importantly, to save lives.
He stated, “Also, the school used the initiative as a means to give back to society as a blood drive is the best act of selflessness.”
The private school had its first blood drive in 2007 which produced 76 units of blood. Eventually, the units of blood donated significantly increased from 2007 to 2011, where from 76 units it increased to 308 units.
As of 2012, the school hosted the annual blood drive twice and had a total of 556 units of blood. The school received its highest donation in 2013 where 1,059 units were donated.
They continued these blood drives which contributed to a total of 6,997 units of blood from 2007 to 2019.
