The law and department policy will usually state that an officer must drive with due regard for public safety. All intersections require prudent action by the emergency vehicle driver. The following steps should be followed when approaching a negative right-a-way intersection (red light, stop sign or yield) the apparatus should not exceed 15mph and shall be prepared to stop. If you are waiting at an intersection and an ambulance, fire engine or any emergency vehicle is behind you, you must not go through a red stop light. The onus is on the emergency vehicle to find a way through.
Emergency vehicles often stop or slow down at intersections to check if they can pass through safely. You must give way to emergency vehicle that is sounding an alarm or showing flashing red or blue lights. To be corrected, do all you can to allow it to pass. Pulling to the left gives the emergency vehicle more room and slowing down shortens the ‘ time exposed to danger ‘ , i.e. the time it takes to overtake you.
Yours Faithfully,
