Golfers will be given an opportunity to sharpen their skills ahead of the much anticipated Guyana Open when the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) host a double header this weekend. The Citizen’s Bank Cancer Awareness competition is set for today while the Banks DIH Open will be contested tomorrow; both events were launched yesterday at Thirst Park.
The tournaments will be contested in the 0-9, 10-18 and 19-28 Flights with prizes being given the top three finishers in each category, as well as the Nearest to the Pin and Longest Drive.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, President of the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) Aleem Husain said it’s a special weekend for the club and the Banks family, adding that the course is in fine shape.
He said that these tournaments lead to the Guyana Open and will pave the way for more people to get involved in the sport. Husain noted the importance of corporate responsibility and said they will be trying their best to promote Cancer Awareness which is very critical to the lives of many.
LGC Public Relations Officer, Bishop Guy Griffith added that both tournaments are important to the LGC. “We really appreciate the commitment from both companies and we do look forward to their continued backing. This weekend provides an ideal opportunity for the golfers to prepare for the Guyana Open so we can expect keen rivalry.”
Banks DIH Communications Manager, Troy Peters stated that the company has been a major sponsor of the LGC for many years. “We have been sponsoring the Guyana Open for many years and Citizen’s Bank at one time sponsored the Players’ Cup, so a few years ago we decided to team up. We are very pleased to be associated with the sport and are looking forward to two exciting days of golf.”
He extended a warm welcome to the overseas players who are here to compete in the Guyana Open and indicated that over 60 players are expected to compete this weekend. Liquor Warehouse Executive, Mark Lashley said that both tournaments are expected to produce much excitement and wished the players well, while Engineering Executive, Gavin Todd urged the public to support the tournaments.
He informed that they will be showcasing their products and services, and is looking forward to support from the public. Today’s tournament will tee off at 12:20hrs while action tomorrow will start at 08:30hrs. (Zaheer Mohamed)
