President of the Danish Football Association (DBU) Jesper Moller and Wayne Forde, President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), yesterday signed a historic Football Development Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Pegasus Hotel for the Development of Guyana’s football.
Forde, who became GFF head in 2015, laid out eight key objectives to be implemented, adding that for football to grow in any country, big or small, genuine partnerships that endures all seasons are essential.
“The DBU and the GFF have taken the first step in a long journey that has the potential to completely transform the beautiful game in Guyana” informed Forde. The GFF Boss said the objectives are Coaching Education, Infrastructure Development, Camp Management & Professional Football League Development, Women’s Football, Grassroots Football, Youth Development, Referee Development and Governance & Administration.
He gave a brief background to yesterday’s historic signing saying almost two years ago he met Moller during a FIFA Summit in Nigeria where he was given an opportunity to present the GFF’s strategic vision.
“Jesper and I spoke extensively about the challenges we face in Guyana and how those challenges impact the implementation of the Executive Committee’s strategic vision for Guyana’s Football. Jesper subsequently extended a hand of friendship and made a commitment to support the implementation of the strategic priorities of the GFF” Forde explained.
That meeting sowed the seeds for the development of Guyana’s football and Forde said yesterday’s visit is the manifestation of a promise made by a friend of Guyana’s football.
He also reminded that this is only the second bilateral agreement a Caribbean Nation and a UEFA member has entered into.
Forde acknowledged that more could be done for female football and informed that next phase of work at the GFF National Training Centre at Providence is the conversion of the building into dorms so that players could have live-in camps there. This should be completed by the first quarter of 2020.
Forde also revealed that the GFF has acquired15 acres of land between the Durban Park in the City and Berbice. Howard McIntosh (Senior Project Manager of Concacaf) speaking on behalf of Concacaf, said he was happy to celebrate and support this milestone in Guyana.
“I had a chance to see the match between Guyana and Antigua & Barbuda and I am happy with the administration of football in Guyana and we at (Concacaf) will continue to support football in Guyana,” disclosed McIntosh.
He informed that work has already started in countries like Guyana and these developmental programmes will last until 2030 way past the 2016 FIFA World Cup. Moller stated that the MoU will run up to 2026 and both countries are expected to benefit.
“Football can bring people together and we want to build bridges. I came here to learn about what is done in Guyana. We don’t have an Academy in Denmark so this is about finding common ground,” said Moller, who said he was invited here by Forde when they first met in Nigeria.
“It’s important to execute on this since the focus is on the 2026 World Cup and this project should be completed by 2020 so I have to deliver,” Moller concluded. UEFA Head of International Relations, Ms. Eva Pasquier, also spoke at the signing yesterday.
