The invasion of parts of northern Syria by Turkey, ostensibly to create a safe zone between the two countries, must be cause for serious concern by the international community and all peace loving people throughout the world.
Hundreds of thousand of people, mainly Kurds, are forced to flee the comfort of their homes out of fear for their lives. Already there are reports of several deaths as a result of bombings by the Turkish armed forces.
It is unbelievable that in this modern age a country can choose to invade another country without fear of international sanctions by the United Nations and other big powers.
The motives for the invasion are political and ideological and no amount of political spin by the Turkish authorities can convince the rest of the world otherwise. As correctly pointed out by the UN Secretary General, there cannot be a military solution to a fundamentally ideological problem.
It is time for the UN Security Council and the other global powers to intervene immediately in order to avert a likely catastrophic outcome.
