The Elections campaign has begun and the leaders of the major political parties have abandoned their luxury offices and have taken to the streets handshaking, taking pictures with children and the elderly, making all sorts of promises, talks of the oil/gas sector and of money transfers and what each party can offer or not offer.
President Granger has shown from time to time that he is not King Solomon the wise, without proper examination of the proposal by eminent Guyanese Economist Professor C.Y Thomas he cast it aside as mere “handouts” meanwhile opposition leader Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo, a seasoned politician has readily embraced Prof. C.Y Thomas proposal and interprets it in his own narrow political fashion and interest. President Granger sometime later realized that the opposition leader had beaten him to the punch and now seeks to review the proposal in a different light. This could well result in the Coalition returning to the opposition seats in the aftermath of the 2020 General Elections unless Guyana experiences another “Fairy tale Elections”.
Given that the Elections are “free and fair”, the combination of the small parties will change the political landscape. They have at their advantage: (a) most people are fed up of the old political parties after 60 years they never deliver on their promises; (b) The small parties have the personnel and programmes that can bring Guyana out of its political stalemate and economic stagnation and the “healing” of the Guyanese nation. They have now to attract the attention and support of the Radios and TV in order to reach out to the electorate far and wide.
Yours faithfully
