The blatant denial made on human trafficking on the frontier of Guyana and Brazil, by the minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix, in recent times is a cover up for big time corruption that continues to flout the laws of Guyana.
It is known and very visible daily that large numbers of foreigners are passing through the town of Lethem in-transit to Brazil. While some are legally present, others are shuttled through the shoot day and night.
How is it that the immigration police and other law enforcement officers turn a blind eye on this total disrespect and continued violations of our border’s regulation?
The Federals on the other side of Bom Fin, Brazil are much aware that many of these travellers are not adequately processed by Guyanese immigration before entry into Brazil.
Anyway, Brazil accepts and welcomes such persons who for some reason reach their shores and are processed and stamped in under a refugee status.
We all can remember the times back, when the word “human trafficking” was a big thing. What about today?
It is shameful to see and know that the Brazilians and other nationals have a very close watch on our Law enforcement officers as weak and bribable.
The bus services will continue to act in collusion with corrupt officials en-route from Linden to Lethem where they condone these illegal acts because they profit big.
There is a new trend that is occurring in Lethem at present. Whenever the buses arrive here from Georgetown, these bus services call special Brazilians and Guyanese private vehicles to transport suit cases belonging to these foreigners.
They are then smuggled around over and under the lovely Takutu Bridge into Brazil.
Today these buses are discharged randomly in Lethem. The bus services then call special traffickers to continue this lawlessness visible to the naked eyes of the public.
Editor, this scheme seems to be totally out of control from the relevant authority.
Yours faithfully,
Concerned resident of Lethem
