The Solo soft drink sponsored girls’ Under-20 Development Hockey League concluded yesterday at the St. Stanislaus College (SSC) ground on Carifesta Avenue with favourites Bingo Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Spartans brushing aside Saints 3-0 in the final league match to confirm their championship status.
The second place saints could’ve upset GCC if they had won that final match by four goals or more but the dominant Spartans side didn’t leave any room for error during a typically commanding display of hockey.
At the end of the first half, Bingo GCC Spartans led 1-0 courtesy of a field goal (FG) from prolific striker Abosaide Cadagon and when play resumed, Paige Fernandes and MVP Madison Fernandes netted a FG each, to take the game away from the Saints ladies. Madison’s stoppage time strike was good enough to see her ascend to the top of the goal scorers’ table.
Following yesterday’s girls’ under-20 division conclusion, the under-20 boys will take center stage this afternoon with the curtains set to fall on their league.
In the under-20 boys’ division, GCC Pit Bulls are way ahead with 19 points accumulated from their seven games contested.
