So we have here the three top diplomats from the United States, Great Britain and the European Union essentially telling a democratically elected president, in my words, “and we don’t only want you to do it, but we want you to do it immediately”.
The president bristled a little, Lincoln Lewis bristled a little more (he thought they had the right to say it but not at that time) and the rest is history. Nineties kid also used some powerful words against the diplomats in a letter captioned, “Foreign diplomats trample upon Guyana’s sovereignty with impunity” The title of the letter says it all as 90’s kid (whoever that wise person is) succinctly tells the whole story about the imperialistic maneuvers that Guyanese (and other countries like Guyana) people have to endure on a day-to-day basis.
Moreover, these diplomats are essentially guests of the Guyana government and imagine your guest talking down to you in this manner, disrespecting you and giving you orders in your own home. Besides, these diplomats are there with a certain understanding and to perform certain functions- excoriating our president is not one of those functions.
In saying what they said, the diplomats made reference to the Guyana constitution. But where in the constitution does it give diplomats the right to interfere in our internal affairs and where in international law does it give them that right. As a matter of fact, international law is explicitly against that sort of thing. So, in wrongfully accusing the president of violating Guyana’s constitution, they turn around and not only violate our constitution but also international law in the process. If they had done that in Putin’s Russia, they would have been long gone out of Russia. Putin wouldn’t put up with something so atrocious and abominable. Trump and Johnson would have had to send replacements.
Only when you are poor and powerless can they do this to you. The rich people do it to poor people and the rich countries do it to the poor countries. Maybe, when oil production begins next year we can speak out more for our rights and demand greater respect.
I hope that the oil doesn’t only make us rich as a country, but it will also enrich and empower us as a people and as a nation. I hope that oil will make us bolder and less timid in our international relations.
I know that the PPP may be laughing their heads off at this latest slight and humiliation of our president. However, they should realise that the same kind of eyepass and disrespect could also happen to them if they ever get back into power. If they were a principled political body they would also be exposing the evil for what it is. I doubt whether such blatant disrespect would have occurred under Forbes Burnham’s rule. At least, he would have had some appropriate words with which to respond. Sometimes, President Granger comes off as being a little too “nice” but aren’t we all. As opposition leader, I don’t think that Cheddi Jagan would have condoned the remarks. You see, Mr. Jagdeo, it’s not really about President Granger, it’s really about a system of oppression that we are all up against.
Respectfully,
Rudy Vyfhuis
