Play in the ninth annual Courts Peewee football tournament got underway yesterday afternoon following the official March Past and ceremonial kickoff which was done by the Managing Director of the sponsors, Clyde De Haas.
Winners of the seventh edition in 2017; West Ruimveldt Primary, emerged as the winning team of the March Past and soon after they collected their winning trophy, play got underway.
When the first whistle was blown for the Timehri versus St. Ambrose opening encounter, the spectators weren’t too bothered with the 45-minute delay to the match that was scheduled to begin at 13:00hrs and Keron Williams excited the patrons after scoring with the game’s first touch; a powerful shot from the halfway line that caught the opposing keeper off guard.
Obediah Munroe equalised 17 minutes later with a thundering shot into the roof of Timehri’s net from close range, but Estevan Medina ensured that Timehri would gather three points in the group round-robin encounter with a goal in the 34th minute of play that allowed his team to win 2-1.
In other results of the day, Plaisance Bosco Orphanage beat St. Agnes 2-0, while Uitvlugt got past Ann’s Grove in a similar two goal fashion. Jaden Tasher netted a hat-trick in Soesdyke’s 4-1 win over F.E. Pollard, while Tucville gained a walkover against Mocha Arcadia. Enterprise also had an easy three points after Smith Memorial were a no-show.
The defending champions, St, Pius Primary hammered Mae’s 8-0 courtesy of 5 goals from Jamal Fraser, a brace from Nickali Watson and one goal from Brian Brown. Genesis Primary had no trouble against South Ruimveldt Primary whom they beat 3-0.
J.E. Burnham needled St. Stephen’s thanks to Immanuel Lewis 18th minute strike and North Georgetown edged Redeemer Primary 2-1.
Meanwhile, the matches between West Ruimveldt and Craig along with the Marian Academy versus St. Margret’s encounter both finished as goalless draws. (Calvin Chapman photos and story)
