Somebody needs to be held accountable for this “decision.” Yesterday, the bus that took us to the University of Guyana was told to halt at the bus stop in the rain. The bus stop on campus is, in my estimation, a good way from the main buildings of the University. To stop the bus at the bus stop would be crazy while it is raining, because an entire group can get sick, some can die, even the obvious – get soaked. Are you going into class soaked? What if the class you have is being held in an air-conditioned room?
I will not misrepresent what transpired afterwards. Immediately I took to the security shed that is in close proximity to the bus stop -and is responsible for ensuring that the buses do not pass the bus stop point – to find out why if it was raining that the buses were not allowed to go in?
The man (I do not know his name), said that he was “under instruction” not to let the buses pass in. Moreso, he then went on to tell me that if the buses went in, he would not get to record who went into the university and if it was a student or not.
To all these things I simply asked “who’s instruction?” and he replied “the administration had a meeting with the chairman of the bus service to not have them pass that point”.
I then turned to him and said “it is raining, what are we to do? This is a flood, you cannot ask persons who are paying millions of dollars to an entity to walk in the rain knowing that the buses can take them to a spot where shelter would be provided instantly”
At this point I am disgusted. However, since the issue was brought to the attention of the supervisor, Ms. Cornette, she sent another guard to indicate to the buses that they can now pass, as opposed to stopping at the bus stop. The man that was refusing to let the bus pass, refused to take her instruction, even though she got to a point where she said “you are making my pressure raise,” because of her repetitive order to him, to indicate to the buses that they could pass in.
Editor, does this decision to you, seem fair to us the students? If indeed this decision was never a stance of anyone in charge, then why does the security continue to put us through this inhumane treatment?
In light of all this, I was told by the same guard that the Chairman of the Bus Service did indicate to the bus drivers that when it rains, they must take the students in. Why then are the drivers refusing to do same if this is true? Understand too, that there’s a sign that indicates that the buses should stop at the bus stop, so if it rains and that sign isn’t removed, then the drivers are free to assume the old rules apply and they can’t go beyond that point, as the sign indicates.
