Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill played with valour but was unlucky in her 4-0 round-of-16 defeat against Colombia’s Paula Medina where she went down 11-8, 13-11, 11-9, 13-11 during the best of seven clash yesterday at the National Sports Complex in Videna, Lima, Peru.
Each game could have gone either way but Edghill was unlucky to be on the losing end of each of game.
At the end of the knockout match, Edghill, who recently signed a professional contract with a second division club in Portugal, noted that she was extremely disappointed in how the match went but vowed to keep training and improving.
Meanwhile, the Track and Field team will burst into action from today and Aaliyah Abrams who have qualified for the 2020 Tokyo, Japan Olympics in the 400m quarter-mile dash, along with the rest of Guyana’s Track and Field contingent are ready and rearing to go in today’s opening events.
Guyana’s track and field team at the 18th Pan American games that is being supervised by coach Julian Edmonds consists of three athletes who have qualified for this year’s World Championships in Emmanuel Archibald, Abrams and Brenessa Thompson, while Jenea McCammon, who will be contesting the women’s 100m hurdles, arrived yesterday.
Archibald, who reset the national long jump record twice this year with a best distance of 8.12m, is aiming to make the Olympic qualifying distance of 8.22m at these games. In addition, he has also been given the green light to compete in the men’s 100m dash in which he has some big wins including victory against Olympic Gold medalist Yohan Blake.
Abrams, Archibald and Thompson all posited that they are not fazed by the cold temperature and humidity of Peru and are all looking to register personal best when they hit the track.
