Yesterday, at a simple handing over Ceremony at the Courts main branch on Main Street Georgetown, Courts Brand Manager Odette Aaron handed over a cheque to President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle as continued support for the fourth annual Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships.
Guyana are the three-times defending Champions and this year’s Championships is scheduled for August 16-18 and for the first time will be hosted at the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall (CASH) after the three previous year’s Championships were staged at National Gymnasium.
A Squad of 22 Boxers, under the watchful eyes of Coaches Lennox Daniels, Clifton Moore, Clive Atwell and Sebert Blake, have been encamped every weekend at the Gymnasium from June 14 and last Sunday did some Glove work at Andrew ‘Six Heads’ Lewis Boxing Gym in the heart of Albouystown as preparations for this Event intensified.
Aaron disclosed that while Boxing has not attracted many Companies as sponsors, she said that Boxing is not only a sport but provides Health benefits.
“When you are stressed out, one of the ways to relieve stress is to box a punching bag. We will continue to contribute to this as long as it’s held,” said Aaron.
Ninvalle thanked Courts for their contribution and not only for this tournament but all their Boxing events including the Friday nights fights.
Ninvalle said he was fairly satisfied with preparations of the Boxers and administratively for the biggest Event for Schoolboys and Girls Boxing in the Caribbean.
Ninvalle said that there are female bouts in every Championship, adding that Venezuela should be sending a Girl.
Talking about Keevin Allicock’s performance at the Pan American Games in Peru where the 20-year-old Forgotten Youth Foundation pugilist missed out on a bronze Medal after a highly controversial loss in his first fight on Monday night, Ninvalle said, “As a boxing fan and President of the GBA I am disappointed with the result but satisfied that Allicock, who had the best preparation possible, had given his best effort.”
He thanked the GOA for sending Allicock to train in Cuba before he departed for Lima, but when asked by a journalist if he thought conspiracy was involved since Allicock also lost controversially at the Commonwealth Games, Ninvalle said that he was not a Referee or a Judge but looking at the Video of the fight as a layman he felt that the Guyanese had easily won but said he did not think any conspiracy was involved.
