Following in the steps of her late uncle, Dr. Mohamed Yousouf [MY] Bacchus, a reputable gynaecologist who is best known for his laudable years of service at the Woodlands Hospital, Saaraa Alia Bacchus is about to make her mark in the medical field.
Another uncle, Dr. Mohamed Hussain Bacchus, was also her inspiration.
The daughter of Bobby and Jean Bacchus of the Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown Bacchus Drug Store will shortly begin her role as a junior doctor in Endocrinology at the Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, England.
The London-born Saaraa’s performance at Grammar School certainly paved the way for her to set about her journey into the medical world. At the Nonsuch Grammar School for ‘A’ levels, she completed Maths, Biology, Chemistry, French and Critical Thinking. She gained 13 ‘O- Levels’ subjects with 13 A’s.
Following this, she completed a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Science at King’s College London. She also benefitted from a wide array of work experience at various clinics and hospitals ranging from New York to Guyana.
With her vast experience and the ability to easily grasp concepts, she was privileged to be accepted into Barts and London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Whilst in medical school, Saaraa was able to undertake committee roles in the pre-hospital medicine society, pharmacology society and benefitted from hospital placements across the various hospitals across east London.
Having recently graduated from Barts and London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Saaraa said, “I feel like it’s been a marathon of a course, and it’s about maintaining consistent in performance throughout the years, as oppose to a sprint.”
But there was support along the way which she readily gave credit to. “I think the friends I’ve made along the way really helped to encourage me.”
However, she admitted that her deepest motivation came from the many stories she heard of her dearly departed uncle – Dr. MY Bacchus.
“Growing up hearing about his stories really inspired me to become a doctor…” said Saaraa; as she added, “I feel that although a greater financial reward can come with several other jobs, it doesn’t compare to the reward of actually being able to make a direct impact on people’s lives.”
Saaraa’s entire family, especially, her parents wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
