The newly formed Neighbourhood Democratic Council [NDC] within the Nile Cozier district, Upper Pomeroon, is assessing the needs of farmers, who may be at flood risk.
The area was recently visited by the NDC Chairman, accompanied by representatives from the Regional Administration, including the Regional Executive Officer Mr. Denis Jaikaran, and the National Drainage and Irrigation [NDIA] Team.
The Pomeroon area is quite popular for its production of coconuts, citrus fruits, ground provisions and other cash crops.
As of recent, however, the Pomeroon River and Savannahs throughout the Pomeroon, have become a threat to farming during spring tides and the rainy season. With the poor drainage system, farmers contend that they would have lost entire cultivated farms due to flooding.
The establishment of an NDC within the area is deemed a strategic move by Government, since it will aid in bringing some measure of relief to the farmers living within the farming area.
The objective of the recent visit, Kaieteur News understands, was to assess the needs of the farmers, who were already requesting the construction of a high-level dam, to protect their crops from the Akawini Savannah water in the rainy season.
These farms are located on the western banks of the Lower Pomeroon River from the area of Cozier to the Nile.
After spending decades on their farm lands, many farmers are acquainted with the system that needs to be set in place. The Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Jaikaran said that he visited the area on request of the farmers, who would have spent tremendous sums of money to dig canals to drain their land during the rainy season.
The team was privileged to visit one of these model farms where dams were built up to block the Akawini Savannah water from passing through their farmlands to the Pomeroon River. The Regional Engineer, Kawan Suchit, said that a high-level dam at the Western end of the farmlands, based on the model farm, would be ideal for blocking these waters.
The Regional Administration indicated that it will approach the Central Government to provide funding, which will aid in constructing the dam in phases with the cooperation of the Nile Cozier NDC.
