We, the workers at a Construction Project (name provided) on the East Bank of Demerara, would like the Labour Ministry to come and intervene in some very serious matters that we are having with our salaries, working conditions, NIS and overtime.
First, some of the management is very disrespectful to the workers – they don’t know how to talk to people.
We work from Sunday to Saturday for $4000 and $5000 per day for seven days. Saturday and Sunday is flat salary – no time-and-a-half – and when we ask why this isn’t the case, they say, ‘take it or go home.’
When it is pay day, many persons receive short pay and have to quarrel for their money. The response is the same: ‘take it or go home’ Later they take out money for NIS, but we don’t know if any money is being paid to the scheme.
And not forgetting, there is no lunch room or rest room for workers; we have to be out in the sun for lunch.
We would like officials of the Ministry of Labour to visit and talk to the workers, they would be surprised to hear some of the complaints.
Frustrated and disrespected workers
