A number of sporting events have been organised for today in memory of former national female junior cycling Champion Beyoncé Ross.
Ross, 15 and a former resident of Rose Hall Town, died a year ago from a Brain Tumor. She won three gold medals at the 2017 National School Cycling Championship a few months before.
The family is in the process of setting up a foundation to assist others who would have fallen on difficult times.
The foundation has organised a number of sporting events including a cycle road race and fun day in memory of the young hero and to raise funds to drive the foundation forward.
The cycle road race will peddle off at 08:00 hrs from the Rose Hall Town arch to the No 51 Police Station before returning to its place of origin at Rose Hall. The event is only for cyclists in Berbice.
A foot race will also be held from Rose Hall to Johns, Port Mourant and back to Rose Hall.
The day will then switch to the Area H Ground, Rose Hall Town where there will be athletics, cricket, basketball and volleyball events.
Beyoncé began getting severe headaches in early February 2018; the symptoms forced her mother to rush her to the Port Mourant Hospital and eventually the New Amsterdam Hospital. She was being treated for ulcer and stomach pain.
Her condition worsened, and a subsequent MRI scan revealed that she had a tumor in the center of her brain. She underwent her first surgery on the 13th April, 2018 at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
It was later revealed that the tumor was not cancerous. The family was informed by doctors that the surgery could not be done in Guyana. As efforts were being made to solicit funds to take her overseas for the delicate surgery she passed away in June.
According to the family, efforts are being made to prevent others from suffering as the young and upcoming star did. The foundation, hopes to assist persons who are diagnosed with tumors in the brain at an early stage.
“Beyoncé was just 15 and full of life and unfortunately she passed away. If we don’t do something, Beyoncé’s death would just pass like that and that will not be ideal for her, so that is why the foundation is being formed in her memory”. (Samuel Whyte)
