“Both of you have made us proud to be Berbicians and you are following in the footsteps of numerous cricketing legends. We are very confident that you would uphold the high tradition set by Kanhai, Trim, Butcher, Solomon and Fredericks. As you leave to represent the West Indies Under-15 Team, I would like to urge you to be discipline, hard working, dedicated to always remain humble. Remember the people who assisted you along the way, be kind to everyone and most importantly have faith in the God you believe in”. Those were the inspiring words of President Hilbert Foster at the 2nd Annual Awards Ceremony of the Berbice Cricket Board as the Board honoured West Indies Under-15 selectee Isaiah Thorne and Rampersaud Ramnauth.
The Berbice Cricket Board joined hands with the Regional Democratic Council of Region 6 to honour the two young Berbicians who would be leaving shortly for England. Foster sternly advised the youths to be discipline at all times of their lives, to be humble and not to let fame get the better of them. Noting that Berbice is known across the cricketing legends, he urged the attentive duo to always fly the flag of the Ancient County high at all times. Foster pledged the Berbice Cricket Board assistance in every step of the players career and stated that under his leadership, every youth in Berbice would be given the opportunity to fulfill his/her full potential inspite of race, creed or status.
Regional Vice Chairman Dennis Deroop stated that the Regional Democratic Council was pleased to work along with the Berbice Cricket Board as it was a perfect example of how a sports organisation should operate. Cricket, he stated is now one of the top financial earner for athletes and he urged Thorne and Ramnauth to grab their opportunities with both hands.
Regional Chairman David Armogan in a passionate speech recalled speaking to Indian Superstar Amitabh Bachan during his visit to Guyana and Bachan telling him that he only knew of Guyana because of Rohan Kanhai. Like the two other speakers, Armogan spoke of the importance of discipline and culture of being humble. The Regional Democratic Council, the Regional Chairman said would continue to invest heavily in Sports as it was a safe avenue for youths. He told the packed Port Mourant Community Centre Hall that the Berbice Cricket Board was privileged to have Hilbert Foster as its President because like King Midas, everything and projects he touches turned to gold.
Both West Indies selectees received a cricket bat valued at $30,000 each from the RDC. Ramnauth during the ceremony also won the BCB Under-13 Player of the Year, while Thorne took home the Most Promising Male Player Award. Both Players expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board and Regional Democratic Council for the bats, while they also pledged to make Berbice very proud of them.
