DEAR EDITOR,
Mr Granger, it appears, has entered into a ‘cat and mouse game’ with the CCJ. The request for a meeting with the Leader of the Opposition after June 24 not only shows blatant disrespect for the CCJ, but also signals political degeneration. Clearly, Mr Harmon’s letter of June 20 to Dr. Jagdeo, in essence, represents a yet another attempt by Mr Granger and his APNU + AFC administration to frustrate Guyana’s progress and undermine the well-being of the populace.
First, June 24 was set as the date for both, the government and the opposition, to present their consensus position(s) which they would like the Court to enter in/as the Orders. Instead, Mr Granger, through his mouthpiece, Mr Harmon, has said that he will meet with Dr. Jagdeo only after the CCJ has entered its Orders. In effect, Mr Granger has continued to poke fun at the CCJ, something which began with the mediocre and ‘micky-mouse’ presentations by the government-side lawyers during the CCJ hearings on the validity of the no-confidence motion and constitutionality of the appointment of the GECOM Chairman. Clearly, Granger’s defiance equates with no respect for the CCJ.
Further, it is becoming clear that we have entered another era of political degeneration. Those of us old enough might remember the actions of the late former president, Hugh Desmond Hoyte, who refused to accept that he had lost the 1992 elections free, fair and transparently.
While in opposition, he led his marauding band through the streets of Georgetown, chanting ‘slow fire, mo-fire’ which caused chaos and mayhem almost like that of 1963-64. He would later drape the coffin of the notorious Linden ‘Blackie’ London who plundered and murdered Guyanese during his ‘cat and mouse spree’ with the police until their gun-showers ended his life.
Mr Granger has picked up from where Hoyte left off; he has continued the degenerative process. First, he has shielded and harbored Volda Lawrence who had called for clandestine hiring of only party (potentially race based) supporters. Second, he honored condemned terrorist/criminal, Abdul Kadir in our Parliament. Third, Granger, in no uncertain terms and acts, defied the Chief Justice’s ruling, and the rule of law in the aftermath of December 21 carried no-confidence vote.
Now, enters Winston Jordan whose ‘war break’ utterances to youths during his recent ministerial outreach in Bartica must receive censorship from the ERC. Mr Granger has so far remained silent on the matter. ‘War break’ is rightly receiving wide spread media spotlight. Mr Granger’s current posture flouts the CCJ. He is blatantly showing Guyanese and others that he is ‘the boss’, bigger and higher than the law, and therefore, can defy even the highest court, the CCJ.
In a nutshell, Mr Granger’s ‘cat and mouse game’ not only snubs the CCJ, but also represents a political degenerative process. These actions clearly defy logic, and ignore the democratic goals and ideals of our nation. It is worth repeating that the rule of law is the cornerstone of a democratic society which is built through active participation of its citizens in decisions that affect their lives and by challenging and removing sociopolitical and economic inequality, among other barriers. Mr Granger’s posture hints at dictatorship in the making, and demonstrates total disregard for the rule of law, national progress and prosperity, and ultimately, shows no concern for the rights and well-being of Guyanese.
Yours sincerely,
Ronald Singh
