Forty-year-old Goddfrey Mbihia of Kenya will conclude his visit to Guyana this week. The veteran distance runner, who was brought to the ‘land of many waters’ compliments of the Guyana Committee of Service (GCOS), competed in two 5k road races and he also conducted training seminars with some of the top distance and middle distance athletes, locally.
Mbihia ran from the pack to win the Ex-Athletes Association 5k race and the GCOS in association with the Rising Stars Athletics Club 5k race that were both competed last month. The Kenyan copped wins in both the 40 and over veterans’ and open categories.
“Here in Guyana you guys have great athletes, you just need to do something for them. The government (state) needs to make more contribution towards infrastructure and gear. Not only the government, but support from NGOs and the Corporate Community is vital to these lads reaching their full potential,” Mbihia noted.
This week, Mbihia conducted a training session at the Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) that is based in Eve Leary with the club’s middle distance athletes and he was again convinced that Guyana has much untapped talent that can be nurtured to be world class.
Despite his age, Mbihia noted that he is still improving and noted that the mean age of retirement from where he comes from is around 46-47 years, “I must say back home we train hard. Age doesn’t matter, its how you train. You train hard to achieve what you want. Even today I still believe I can do better at age 40. “
Committee member of the GCOS, Leslie Black, noted that he has been friends with Mbihia for a few years and upon learning the veteran was in the Trinidad & Tobago (T&T), he pounced on the opportunity to bring him to Guyana.
Black further shared that he is proposing to work with the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to send three athletes to Kenya for a training programme. However, Black revealed that local track star, Cleveland Forde, had benefited from such a programme but his results were not favourable, which has prompted the GOA to be very adamant in undertaking another such initiative but he believes that other athletes should be given a chance.
