Timehri Panthers FC, Botofago FC, Dynamic FC and New Amsterdam United FC have all advanced the last eight of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/KFC National Independence Cup following victories in their respective playoff matches yesterday at the GFF National Training Centre, Providence.
Timehri Panthers proved too much for Soesdyke Falcons as they romped to a 5-1 victory. Tyrone Khan opened the account for the winners in the 14th minute, while Shawn Stelle put them further ahead six minutes later as his team went to the break enjoying a 2-0 advantage. Tyrone Burnette stretched the lead two minutes into the second half as Timehri Panthers continued their dominance. Shoran James slotted home in the 66th minute as Soesdyke Falcons struggled to keep up with the pace. Shannox Samnauth completed the scoring for Timehri Panthers in the 70th minute, while Jonathan Bailey pulled one back for Soesdyke Falcons.
Botofago FC of Linden came from one goal down to beat Den Amstel FC of West Demerara 4-2. Anthony Benn handed Den Amstel the lead in the 42nd minute before Andre Mayers drew Botofago level three minutes later. Following the break, Marlon Duke put Botofago ahead when he slotted home in the 57th minute before Kelroy Anthony extended the advantage in the 64th. Benn gave his team some hope as he found the back of the net in the 80th minute, after which Shane Haynes scored Botofago’s fourth goal in the second minute of added time to safely secure his team’s berth in the last eight.
Led by a double from John Gonsalves, Dynamic FC of East Coast Demerara sounded a stern warning to their rivals with a 5-0 drubbing of Potaro Strikers of Bartica. Gonsalves opened the account in the 36th minute, but Potaro Strikers managed to contain their opponents for the remainder of the first half. As the battle continued in the second stanza neither team managed to make an impact on goal, until Dequan Douglas extended his team’s advantage in the 72nd minute. Gonsalves netted his second in the 83rd, while Linden Bowman scored his team fourth in the 89th.
The final matchup of the day, saw an intense battle between New Amsterdam United FC and Amelia’s Ward FC of Linden with the former prevailing 1-0. Despite several raids on goal, the first half went goalless; however Oren Glen put New Amsterdam United FC ahead two minutes into the second half when he slotted home from inside the area. Amelia’s Ward FC tried desperately for the equaliser and their best chance came minutes from the final whistle, but Kevin Charles sent his shot wide from inside the box with only the goalkeeper to beat. Dexter Welcome could have added a second for New Amsterdam United, but he squandered the chance by sending his shot wide of the net after being set one-on-one with defender Keyshawn Dey. Action in the play offs continues today with Fruta Conquerors facing Cougars from 11:00hrs, Buxton United FC playing Queenstown United FC at 13:00hrs and Pouderoyen FC battling Santos at 15:30hrs.
